Treason's Trial: A Culper Spy Story

  • Theatre Three 412 Main Street Port Jefferson, New York, 11777 United States (map)

In honor of our nation’s 250th anniversary, Long Island audiences are invited to experience the explosive true story of how George Washington’s spy ring came to be. On Saturday, October 3, 2026—coinciding with the annual Culper Spy Day events—Theatre

Three will present the premiere of TREASON’S TRIAL: A CULPER SPY STORY.

The play was written by Doug Quattrock who co-wrote the music and lyrics with Jeff Hoffman. This brand-new play with music thrusts audiences into the intense, suffocating atmosphere of May 1776. Long before the outcome of the American Revolution was decided, Long Island was a powder keg where neighbor turned against neighbor. With the British fleet massing off the shores, local citizens faced a devastating choice: remain loyal to the King or fight for a dangerous, uncertain freedom.

The high-stakes courtroom drama centers on the historic Brookhaven Committee of Safety as they gather in a Coram sitting room to prosecute accused Loyalist merchant Thomas Fanning.

The inquiry ultimately explores the tense, shadowy beginnings of American espionage right here on Long Island, proving that sometimes, to win a war, you have to fight in the shadows.

Thanks to generous funding by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, provided through the Greater Port Jefferson Historical Society, these exclusive performances are absolutely free to the public.
