2006 Historical Society Programs

This year the Society, in conjunction with the Port Jefferson Free Library, will sponsor a series of programs that will focus on Long Island's history and environment. Unless otherwise noted, all programs meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 P.M. at the Port Jefferson Free Library on Thompson Street. Open to the public and free of charge. Refreshments, free parking and handicap access.




"The History of
Belle Terre"

January 7

Nancy Orth, Belle Terre Village Historian is giving a 3 part presentation of the History of Belle Terre in celebration of their 75th year of incorporation. Members of the Port Jefferson Historical Society have been invited to the Belle Terre Community Center at 7:30 P.M. to hear this interesting presentation.

"Long Island from Brooklyn to Orient and Montauk"

Wednesday, April 26

Dr. Natalie A. Naylor, co-president of the Long Island Studies Council and professor emerita at Hofstra University, will present a lecture on the history of Long Island. Did you know that the Long Island Railroad was not built for Long Islanders but was designed as a short cut to Boston?

"Long Island Baseball
in the 19th Century"

Mickey Tangel, a retired teacher, member of the Smithtown Historical Society and a member of the Society for American Baseball Research will speak on America's favorite pastime: baseball. Come see photographs, hear stories and see artifacts and baseball cards.

"4th of July Parade"

July 4th, 10:00 a.m.

Come watch the old fashiioned 4th of July Parade down historic Main Street. And watch for the Historical Society's float!

"The Almighty Dollar"

Gene Horton will reveal the interesting and curious facts of our paper currency. With a magnifying glass, he will show us things you never knew were in our money.
