Welcome to the web site of the Port Jefferson Historical Society at the Mather House Museum. Inside you will find information about Long Island History and the shipbuilding industry that once flourished on these New York shores. The museums consists of the main home of John Mather with antiques, furniture, paintings by William Davis of boats, boat building and ship yards of the Bayles and Willse family. The outbuilding consists of a country store, butcher and barber shop, sail loft, diaorama, ship models, ships tools, and clock building with clocks from a local persons' years of clock collecting. Also featured are the gardens surrounding the property, containing an herb and perennial garden. There are exhibits of toys, dolls, quilts. You may do research of local areas like Port Jefferson Station and Mt. Sinai, NY through maps, documents, geneology and walking tours. Each fall we have an outdoor country auction.
